Te Morehu Ō Ngā Mokoweri
Te Whatukura a Tangaroa
About Us
We are a collective of direct descendants of Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki, working together to fulfil the aspirations our tūpuna carried for us, and to extend the meaning of the purpose of his return to Te Hokianga Nui Ō Kupe, Te Papa Ō Waimirirangi me Kairewa. We come from Tuamotu, Manihiki, Rarotonga, Maupiti, Ra‘iātea, Aotearoa, and Hokianga. Some of us are hau kāinga from Panguru and Waihou Nui a Rua. We represent descendants from the many Whare that trace lineage through Tupe, Lupe, Kupe Nuku, Kupe Ariki, Kupe Rauru Koata, and Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki, namely, Ngā Whare Ariki Ō Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki. Our connections are interwoven across islands, genealogies, and responsibilities. Within our genealogies, there is record of eight individuals named Kupe over the past two thousand years, one of whom was a woman.
In October 2025, over 700 recorded emails were sent to whānau in Hokianga to inform them of this work and of our tūpuna Kupe. More than 100 people responded, expressing interest in participating in upcoming kaupapa. Throughout 2025, we met with and held discussions among many whānau. October 27th, 2025 - Tou Rangatira, Waitangi, I gave a formal presentation to Te Wakaminenga Ō Ngā Hapū - The Confederation Of United Tribes to inform them of Kupe's return to Hokianga. I was representing the hapū of Te Uri O Te Aho from Waihou. It was recieved well. Some have offered strong support, others remain unsure, and many more conversations are yet to take place. We acknowledge this openly. We are not here to please everyone. We are here to build a vision for a future that is increasingly uncertain. A vision that's humble, yet, independent.
Our objective is to create a living record of this journey. This location carries the living record of Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki from when his life begun, to the work that continues through whakapapa, whenua, moana, and celestial alignment. It is not a campaign, a movement, or a belief system. It does not seek followers, permission, or validation. We are here to do the work. This work is carried underneath Te Tikanga Nui Ō Te Mana Tuku Iho — the Supreme Order of Pacific Inherent Authority — and expressed relationally through Pacific Inherent Relations International (PIRI), alongside the Whare currently active in responsibility.
We recognise that we are all descendants, and that each of us carries an individual right and responsibility to act on behalf of our tūpuna. What is shared here is offered for continuity — so that what has been held, carried, and lived is not lost, distorted, or severed from its source. Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki is recognised as a master wayfinder, tohunga, and bearer of celestial knowledge, whose arrival and presence in Aotea Roa is held within ancestral memory, place-names, star knowledge, and responsibility to land and people. This location does not attempt to retell history through colonial frames, nor does it seek to replace existing narratives. It does not seek to operate within mainstream political, academic, commercial, or corporate realities. It simply stands within what has always been. At this time, the work made visible here is expressed through Te Whare Ariki and Te Whare Kokorangi Ō Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki. These houses are active because they are relevant to the responsibilities currently being carried. They do not represent the entirety of the infrastructure, nor do they stand alone. Other houses exist and will be spoken of when their time arrives. We do not care for fame, titles or status. We only stood Te Whare Ariki and Te Whare Kokorangi up because it's our spiritual inheritance. Secondly, it is merely an instrument to develop and create peace, order, and safety. That is the only reason.
